I photographed Josh Linked in downtown Detroit in January of 2013. Josh is a well-known Detroit community entrepreneur, author and investor. I took this image using one light and balancing it against the sky in the background.

I used tone-mapping and post processing techniques to develop the final image. There were some cords in the scene that I did not want visible in the final image, so I did Photoshop them out.

I took multiple shots all around the same floor of the building. Fortunately, there are many great locations in the Madison building on Broadway.

I’m just getting comfortable with my Canon T4i and now we are facing the idea of a Canon T5i.

I’m not sure how much writing I’ll do on this camera yet, but I find the prospect of a much smaller camera interesting.

Height: 3.6 inches // Width: 4.6 inches // Depth: 2.7 inches // Weight: 13.1 ounce

18 Megapixel APS-C Sensor with DIGIC 5 Processor (5184 x 3456 max image size)

ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12,80 (expand. 25,600)

Movie Servo AF – built-in Mono Mic – Video Snapshot with editing capabilities

Shutter Speed: 30 seconds to 1/4000 second

9 Point AF and 4 fps continuous

SD, SDXC, SDHC Cards

Price: $749 with Canon EF-S 18 – 55mm f/3.5 – 5.6 STM IS zoom lens (will also be sold with 18-135 STM

You will find one of my sources and some additional rumored specs here.

I wrote the book on the Canon T4i last year for Wiley. The T4i had a number of solid advances, although the sensor was still about the same as earlier versions. A couple of my favorite advances are the touch screen and HDR options in the 2012 version of the Rebel.

Will they cut back on some of the features found in the T4i in the new T5i version of the Canon Rebel?

As an active Detroit photographer I really need more durable equipment. So, although I may write about it, I don’t think I’ll purchase this version. Although the 5D is my work-horse camera, I’ve been using the Canon T4i for some of my studio work and I’ve been very happy with the results. The food shot below is a good example of an image taken with the Rebel.

If the new camera is smaller than the already small entry-level DSLR, this will change the current conversation. People are often asking if they should purchase the 6D or the T4i? If they the new Rebel camera is much smaller I think the difference will be much clearer. I have a feeling that is what Canon wants, and in my opinion will mark an end of an era.

The Rebel may no longer be the entry level camera of budding young photographers. Canon fans will need to look a little higher up the chain at a higher priced camera. I think a smaller Rebel will be the play thing of your more basic hobbyist or deemed the family vacation camera.

We will see what happens relatively soon. I’ll keep you updated, if I’m assigned to write more in print form.

Feel free to contact me at rosh@rosh.com

Update: The two cameras were released on March 21, 2013. A smaller camera called the SL1 and the new Canon T5i.

Sometimes owners manuals are lost or not available. This is especially true if you purchase a camera used. The owners manual is nice but it doesn’t really help you make the most of your camera.

I wrote The Canon Rebel T4i/650D Digital Field Guide in six weeks not including a couple weeks of editing. It is full of great information about all the features the the Canon T4i/650D has to offer.

I took thousands of images for the book. The photograph in the middle of the cover is my daughter Ava playing soccer. Actually, much of the book has photographs of family, friends and co-workers. They were are such good sports. The first third of the book is about all the details of the camera. I spent the summer pushing every button and testing each feature. I really got to know this camera well.

I really like the touch screen. I miss it when I’m using my other cameras. The video is great and the HDR features are a nice addition. The continuous focus for video is one of the big new features. It’s nice, but I still prefer manual focus for my professional style work.

One of my favorite parts of the book is that I invited twelve photographers to share their tips about how to take better photographs and video. This really adds a nice dimension and value to the book. It is more than just another manual, the book is really designed to help you get the most of your your camera.

I spent my summer playing with and writing about the Canon T4i camera. It was hard work, but worth it. I wrote a blog post called the Canon T4i book where I share my experience writing and photographing for the book.

Although I don’t use the Canon T4i for most of my professional work, I’ve found it useful for some of my food and product photography in studio. It has a lot of useful features. I actually like the touch screen on back (some don’t). This is also my first dSLR camera with video capability.

Of course, I wouldn’t be a good author if I didn’t inform you that you may purchase your copy here on Amazon or your local book store.
